History of Anne-Marie Javouhey

Childhood and vocation

Born in into a deeply christian home, the oldest daughter of the Javouhey family enjoyed a happy childhood in the village of Chamblanc in Burgundy. The French Revolution would soon try to destroy the Catholic faith. Young Ann taught catechism to the village children, and helped the priests who were being hunted to escape capture. In the garden of her home there was a little oratory and here Anne spent many hours in prayer, feeling a call growing within her. On the night of November 11, in the presence of an &#;outlawed&#; priest, her family and trusted friends, she consecrated her life forever to God.

Anne Javouhey set out in search of a place where she could begin her mission, first in Besancon where Jeanne-Antide Thouret was attempting to revive the Sisters of Charity, then in La Trappe in Valsainte, Switzerland where she met Dom de Lestrange. This French girl organized her farm family in daily silence and prayer. During the Revolution, she rescued people, warned priests and taught children the catechism. A private vow of virginity in led her to try religious life unsuccessfully. She set up a school for poor children, and in she and other women began the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny. Her own effort to join the order’s growing missionary work in French colonies was cut short by illness. Despite controversy, the order flourished and Anne Marie is highly regarded for her treatment of blacks in the 19th century.

St. Anne Marie Javouhey was responsible for the revival of Roman Catholic missions in Africa. The suppression of the Jesuits from to , the ravages of the French Revolution, and the Napoleonic wars left the missions in a state of almost total collapse. These events occurred just before an explosive revitalization of religious orders, however, which resulted in a new missionary era that would parallel, and in many ways be part of, Western colonial expansion. Javouhey was the pioneer in this missionary movement at a critical juncture.

Javouhey was the daughter of a peasant family that hid priests who had refused to take the anticlerical oath of allegiance to the French Revolution. One of the priests encouraged her to pursue a religious life, and she left for the freedom of Switzerland to pursue her goal. With three companions, she began a community of sisters, which was formally founded in as the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny.
