Born Lois Ann Hammersberg on March 20, , in Honolulu, Hawaii, Lowry is one of America's most popular and versatile children's book authors. She has written in a variety of fictional forms, from the WWII tale Number the Stars to the lighthearted adventures of Anastasia Krupnik to the fantastical The Giver.

A shy and introverted child, Lowry loved to read. She was around 8 or 9 years old when she decided she wanted to be a writer. Her father was a dentist and Army officer, which led to her to live in several different places growing up. It’s no surprise that Lois Lowry is such a prolific writer. The longtime Cambridge, Massachusetts, resident recalls spending her childhood as a voracious reader of all kinds of books, especially adult books that had young protagonists. She read and loved “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” when she was 10, and fell under the spell of “The Catcher in the Rye” not long after.

Lowry, a chipper 77, crossed the river from Cambridge to Boston last week to talk about her young adult novel “The Giver,” a coming-of-age tale set in a dystopian future (written in , well before the fad of “The Hunger Games,” etc.). Though the Newbery Medal-winning book’s film rights were purchased by Jeff Bridges almost two decades ago, it’s taken all of these years to make it to the screen. The irony is that Bridges wanted his father Lloyd to play the titular old man, but so much time has gone by, he’s doing it himself.

"I’ve always felt that I was fortunate to have been born the middle child of three. My older sister, Helen, was very much like our mother: gentle, family-oriented, eager to please. Little brother Jon was the only boy and had interests that he shared with Dad; together they were always working on electric trains and erector sets; and later, when Jon was older, they always seemed to have their heads under the raised hood of a car. Lois Lowry was born March in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her parents, Katharine (Landis) and Robert E. Hammersberg (an army dentist). were separated at the onset of World War II. Lowry spent the war years in Pennsylvania. where her mother's family Lived. Early childhood influences included the presence of the Amish and an adoring grandfather. In , when Lowry was eleven, the family was reunited in Japan, where her father was then stationed.
