Nació en la ciudad de Guanajuato, en México, en el seno de una familia con raigambre y tradición en la milicia, por tanto, él siguió dicha “misión” familiar. Lo llamaron Jorge Alberto Negrete Moreno, y cuando se hizo famoso lo apodaron El Charro Cantor. Tuvo 5 hermanos.
Estudió en un colegio alemán, donde aprendió, además, a hablar inglés, francés, italiano y sueco; luego ingresó al Heroico Colegio Militar en el cual se graduó como teniente de caballería y administración del ejército de México.
Comenzó su carrera artística y dejó el ejército. Cantando para la estación de radio XETR descubrió su vocación por el canto y la actuación.
Participó en obras de teatro del género de variedades.
En la ciudad de Nueva York se presentó en cabarés en los que se hizo famoso interpretando rancheras y boleros.
Debutó en la televisión de la mano del productor Gonzalo Varela, con la producción La madrina del diablo.
Se casó con la bailarina y actriz Elisa Christy, con quien tuvo a su única hija: Diana. Se separaron a los dos años.
