Who was George J. Lewis?

George J. Lewis was a Mexican-born actor who appeared in many films and eventuallyTVseries from the s through the s, usually specializing in westerns. He is probably best known for playing Don Alejandro de la Vega, who was Don Diego de la Vega's father in the s Disney television series Zorro. Lewis co-starred in Zorro's Black Whip and had a minor role in Ghost of Zorro before starring as Don Alejandro in the Disney series.

Karl Schriftgeisser, a native of Boston, Massachusetts, was on the staffs of the old Boston Evening Transcript, where he “broke” the famous book censorship story of the 's; the Washington Post; and the New York Times. For six years, he was a book critic for Newsweek Magazine. He contributed articles on a wide variety of subjects to such magazines as the Atlantic Monthly, Collier’s, the New Yorker, and the New York Times Magazine. His book reviews have appeared in the Times, the Herald Tribune, and the Saturday Review. He authored numerous books, including Families, The Amazing Roosevelt Family, , The Gentleman from Massachusetts, This Was Normalcy, Oscar of the Waldorf, and The Lobbyists: The Art and Business of Influencing Lawmakers. His home is on a farm in Londonderry, Vermont, but he spends much time in New York and Washington.

Who Was George Jones?

George Jones began his career by performing on the street to help earn money for his large and impoverished family, and after a brief stint in the military began to pursue his musical ambitions in earnest. In Jones landed in the country Top Ten with "Why Baby Why," and for the rest of his career was very rarely far from the charts, releasing hit single after hit single as a solo artist and as a duet partner with some of country’s biggest stars, most notably Tammy Wynette, who was also his third wife. Battling his personal demons along the way, Jones amassed an impressive musical legacy that earned him a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, among many other honors.

Early Years

George Glenn Jones was born in Saratoga, Texas, on September 12, One of eight children in a poor family, his father was an alcoholic who sometimes grew violent. "We were our daddy's loved ones when he was sober, his prisoners when he was drunk," Jones later wrote in his autobiography, I Lived to Tell It All.
