Ponty Chadha, brother killed: What led to the fatal dispute
From the accounts of those who knew him well, Gurdeep Singh alias Ponty Chadha, who scripted an extraordinary rags-to-riches story for himself in under four decades, was a magnanimous friend and a fearsome rival. While the rivalries led to whispers about his ways, it was his friendships that everyone envied. They spanned political and regional divides, and he nurtured them with great care.
A person who had done Chadha a small favour more than 20 years ago, recalled how he would visit him at home every Diwali, without fail. During that period, Chadha went from being a small Moradabad businessman to a tycoon with interests in alcohol, sugar, real estate, power, paper, film production and exhibition, river sand mining and baby foods.
His Chadha group (with operations under the Wave brand) has interests in UP, Haryana, Punjab and Uttarakhand, and conservative estimates put the group’s assets at more than Rs 20, crore.
