Charles Dickens
Charles Dickens is one of the greatest novelists in the English language. He wrote about the real world of Victorian England and many of his characters were not rich, middle-class ladies and gentlemen, but poor and hungry people. Though he did not believe in revolutionary action, he was on the side of the people with all his heart. He wanted what the people wanted.
Charles Dickens was born in near Portsmouth on the southern coast of England. His father was a clerk at the office of a large naval station there, and the family lived on his small salary. There were eight children
in the family, so life
was hard. Charles went
to school and his
teachers thought
he was very clever.

The happy days of childhood came to an end when the father was moved to London. Charles was the eldest son, but he was not sent to school again. The father made no plans for the education of his children. He was an easy-going man who always spent more money than he could afford. Soon he lost his job and was imprisoned for debt. Dickens was born in London, England on
February 7, He lived in poverty and
suffered greatly. When he was 12, his father, a
gambler who liked to live beyond his means, was
jailed for debt. Charles had to go to work. How
is this similar/different from today? What are
current child labor laws? Charles worked long
hours in a shoe polish factory. He worked
hours per week putting labels on bottles of shoe
polish. He was paid poorly for this.

This experience was so influential on Dickens
that his literary work reflects how it effected
him. This experience was also enough to make
Charles take the side of the underdog (the person
not expected to win, for example, the poor). Many
of his characters are children who suffer from
poverty. Some famous Dickens works are

(Scrooge) A Tale of Two Cities Oliver
