There are those in the hot rod scene who dont know Doane Spencer was a road race guy. Likewise, there are those in the road race scene who dont know he was also a hot rodder.
Doane Spencer enjoyed two distinct phases in a lifetime building cars. And several of his cars have become influential in many ways. In the early s, when Doane was a teenager, he did some work on a full-fendered Ford Roadster hot rod, owned by a classmate of his, Jack Dorn. The work included filling the grille shell and adding a stunning Du Vall windshield. In , Spencer purchased the 32 off Dorn and set about rebuilding it to his own tastes, removing the fenders, and repainting it black (it was originally maroon).
At the time, Spencer was knocking around with other young hot rodders such as Wally Parks, Robert E. Petersen, and Alex Xydias, guys who would all play significant rolls over the coming years in the growth and main stream acceptance of hot rodding.

In , Jack Dorn bought a maroon Ford roadster. Jack painted it black and installed a Ford engine. He filled the grille shell and shaved the deck-lid. In Doane Spencer bought Jack Dorn's Ford Roadster for $ The car was then black with a stock Ford Flathead V8 and a DuVall Windshield. Doane removed the fenders, and installed a Mercury cid Flathead V8 equipped with Ord heads and twin carb log manifold.
In the Doane Spencer Roadster won the Best Appearing Roadster award at the Pasadena Roadster Club's Reliability Run. At the same show the roadster was invited to be displayed at the first annual Hot Rod Exposition in After racing the roadster at El Mirage for a while, Doane began to rebuild the roadster preparing it to run in the Carrera Panamericana. The Mexican road race was canceled before Doane was able to run the car, so he ended up selling it to Lynn Wineland.

You’ve heard it said that Deuce roadsters are like bellybuttons – everyone has one. Well, maybe not everyone, but you get the point. The venerable and iconic ’32 roadster is hot rodding’s signature ride. Original steel, fiberglass, new steel, it doesn’t matter, the Deuce’s timeless profile and rich history ensure its place as car-guy royalty.
A few key ’32 are believed to be instrumental in establishing the Deuce’s lionization, and the highboy owned by Doane Spencer in the mids is one of them. The car was originally owned by Spencer’s high school buddy Jack Dorn, who picked it up in Dorn, a hot-rodder himself, had modified the car in the style of the period, save one notable exception: it’s defining split V-shaped DuVall windshield. The windshield was Spencer’s doing, as it had been affixed to his Model A. When Doane wrecked it, he handed off the windshield to Dorn.
