에토레 바스티아니니는 귀족적 풍모를 지닌 화려한 무대의 모습과 다채롭고 따스한 입김을 느끼게 하는 노래로 세계적인 명성을 떨쳤던 바리톤 가수였다.
베이스로 데뷔하고 이후 6년 뒤인 년에 볼로냐 시립극장에서 <라 트라비아타>의 제르몽을 불러 바리톤으로 데뷔했던 그는 53년 피렌체 5월 음악제에서 프로코피예프의 <전쟁과 평화>의 안드레이 공작,차이코프스키의 <마제파> 중 타이틀 롤을 부른 것이 국제적인 활약의 계기가 되었고,이듬해 12월에 제르몽으로 메트로폴리탄에,이듬해 5월에는 <예프게니 오네긴>의 타이틀 롤로 밀라노 스칼라 극장에 각각 데뷔했다.
이후 세계의 화려한 무대에서 베르디의 오페라를 장기로 하면서 독특한 가창력을 과시했다.
년에는 이탈리아 오페라단의 일원으로 최초의 극동 공연을 갖고 <일 트로바토레>의 루나 백작을 불렀으며,65년에는 리사이틀을 열기도 했다.
그러나 목의 이상증세로 인해 그해 12월 11일 메트로폴리탄 오페라 극장에서의 <돈 카를로> 중 로드리고를 마지막으로 오페라 무대를 떠났고,2년간의 투병생활 후 후두암으로 타계한,제2차 세계 대전 후의 이탈리아 오페라의 대표적인 바리톤이었다.
외롭고 불우했던 어린 시절을 보냈던 그는 후두암을 숨긴 채로 죽기 전까지 무대에 섰던 프로페셔널리스트였으며,청동처럼 강한소리와 벨벳처럼 부드러운 소리의 조화를 가진 아름다운 소리로 대중의 마음을 울렸던 불멸의 바리톤이었다.
에토레 바스티아니니는 년 9월 24일 이태리 중부 토스카나 지방의 시에나에서 태어났다.
그는 고향에서 가까운 피렌체의 케루비니 음악원에서 성악을 공부했고,년 라벤나에서 베이스 역인 <라 보엠>의 콜리네 역으로 데뷔했다.
그의 음역을 바리톤으로 끌어 올려야 한다고 주장했던 것은 그의 선생이었던 베타리니(ini)였다.
그래서 바스티아니니는 년 볼로냐에서 바리톤 역인 <라 트라비아타>의 제르몽 역으로 다시 오페라 무대에 섰다.

The opera world is filled with great tragedies throughout its history.
The story of Ettore Bastianini is easily one of the saddest.
Born on Sept. 24, , Bastianini would go on to become one of the greatest baritones of all time. His voice was beloved by all.
He began his training as a bass, singing his first concerts in and before winning the first prize in the National Singing Contest at the Teatro Comunale Florence.
During World War II, he was drafted into the Air Force where he would remain between But once the war was at an end, he would resume his career as a bass.
From there until , he enjoyed great success as a bass. But then he took a seven-month hiatus to retrain himself as a baritone.
Then he went from a good singer to become a legend.
His baritone career took off in a way his career as a bass never did. His first performance came on Jan. 17, in Siena, but before long he was at the Met Opera, making his debut in He became a regular the following year, performing regularly with the company through the mids.
The late s would bring success with the Vienna State Opera as well as the Salzburg Festival, La Scala

Ettore Bastianini nacque il 24 settembre a Siena nella Contrada della Pantera, e morì a Sirmione sul lago di Garda il 25 gennaio
Era figlio di padre ignoto e sua madre era tutto quello che lui aveva di più importante al mondo. Lavorava come garzone dal fornaio Gaetano Vanni, in via Stalloreggi, con il quale in bottega cantava arie delle opere.
Chi lo ha conosciuto si ricorda di Ettore che con la bici del Vanni e le paste in capo che pedalava e cantava per le vie di Siena.
Dopo una prima esperienza nel coro della Metropolitana del Maestro Sderci, una sera del , all'età di 16 anni, fu accompaganto da alcuni coristi dell'allora Centuria Corale di Siena (che poi tornerà a riprendere il nome di Unione Corale Senese, oggi "Ettore Bastianini") al cospetto dei Maestri Adelmo e Fathima Ammannati, i quali rimasero sbalorditi dal timbro e dal colore della sua voce.
