Steve Martin opens &#;SNL&#; 50th special with hilarious monologue featuring Canadian Martin Short dragged away by ICE

Steve Martin and Martin Short are in the building.

“Saturday Night Live” celebrated 50 years on the air with a three-hour special called “SNL The Anniversary Special,” Feb. 16 (8 p.m. on NBC and Peacock) — and it was fitting that Steve Martin came out to do the monologue, since the actor and comedian has been a frequent host through the years.

Martin opened by first making a political jab (about how he was in a boat in &#;The Gulf of Steve Martin&#;) before making jokes about aging, explaining that as “Saturday Night Live” turns 50, he’s turning

“But I feel like I’m 65 — which is also not good,” he quipped.

The “Only Murders in the Building” star added, “Seriously, I do not mind getting older, do you think these hearing aids make my ass looks smaller?”

He joked that a person who was born when “SNL” first premiered in could today &#;easily be dead of natural causes.”

Martin then took aim at some “SNL” cast members and audience members.

Steve Martin and Martin Short's Friendship Timeline

Steve Martin and Martin Short are one iconic duo, on and off screen.

The comedic actors first worked together in the comedy film Three Amigos! in and have been making us laugh over their friendship ever since.

In addition to starring in numerous projects together, including the Father of the Bride films and Hulu's Only Murders in the Building alongside Selena Gomez, the two have hit the road together on various comedy tours.

They've also been by each other's side for big career milestones. Short notably gave a hilarious speech as Martin was honored with the AFI Life Achievement Award in

"Steve's best quality is who he is as a man," Short previously told PEOPLE of Martin. "He's very moral, he's very loyal, very, very ethical. And this is beyond all that talent."

Martin echoed those same sentiments calling his longtime friend "the perfect person." "He's smart, he's funny," he continued. "He has many friends. He's the most popular guy at your dinner party. If he's coming to a dinner party, it's a better dinner party. If Marty can't come, you cancel the party.

I Must Say: My Life as a Humble Comedy Legend

April 28,

As with most memoirs by comic performers, I partly listened to and partly read Martin Short's I Must Say: My Life As A Humble Comedy Legend. Turns out that was a good decision.

Even working with a co-writer (David Kamp), Short isn’t the best scribe. But he’s a first-rate impressionist. And so when he’s telling stories involving his famous friends (Tom Hanks, Nora Ephron, Steve Martin, Eugene Levy, Paul Shaffer, Gilda Radner, et al.), he brings them to life in the audiobook with quick, sharp impersonations – sort of like a master caricaturist creating a portrait in a couple of seconds.

This book reminded me why I like Short so much. He’s an eternal optimist, something that’s rare in show business. All of that comes through here, even though he’s experienced a lot of pain: the early death of an older brother in a car crash; the loss of both parents by the time he was 20; and, most movingly, the death by cancer of his wife, Nancy, in She was – pardon the cliché – the love of his life. You’ll need a box of Kleenex when reading the book’s closing pages.

In fact, the stories about his family – he grew up in a large brood
Can Martin Short break the all-time JONJ record for a goyishe Jew Score? It has stood at 10 since the original goy profile, Charlie Chaplin.

Like Chaplin, Short is not Jewish. Like Chaplin, many many people assume that he is. Like Chaplin, Short is pretty much beloved by everyone. Like Chaplin, he is pretty funny (although that has no real effect on his Jew Score). Like Chaplin, Short is actually Irish mixed with English (predominantly former in his case, latter in Chaplin's).

So all of that gives Short a rather high O Score, a rather high K Score (we'd love to have you, Marty! Alas), but there is just no way to get a positive I Score. (We thought that he might have a chance by earning a bonus point from a Jewish spouse, but Marty's wife Nancy Dolman was also goyishe.)

So, a very high goyishe Jew Score, but no record

What's this? According to Short, he is "10 percent Jewish on my agent's side!"

That's surely worth an I point!

Verdict: Sadly, Not a Jew.
