Jennifer Lopez says ‘music really does have power to heal’ in AMAs appearance
Jennifer Lopez said “music really does have the power to heal and to uplift and to connect us” while celebrating the 50th anniversary of the American Music Awards (AMAs).
The musical special featured pre-recorded interviews with previous AMA winners, including country star Carrie Underwood, Cuban singer Gloria Estefan and pop superstar and actress Lopez, as well as five-time host Jimmy Kimmel.

Lopez reflected on her most memorable experiences at the AMAs during a taped interview shown during the ceremony, which was slated as “celebrating half a century of groundbreaking music and pop culture history”.
It comes almost two months after she filed divorce from actor Ben Affleck following two years of marriage.
Lopez said performing a tribute to late Cuban singer Celia Cruz during a performance at the AMAs in “was one of the most special nights of my life ever”.
“She’s such an icon, and not just in Latin music, but across the world,” she said.

Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso – Celia Cruz – was born in in Barrio Santos Suarez in Havana, one of 4 children. In a career that spanned six decades, Celia became the “Queen of Salsa,” and was central to the genre’s rising popularity.
Celia was drawn to music from an early age. Legend has it that her first pair of shoes was actually a gift from a tourist for whom she sang. In addition to singing her siblings to sleep, Celia sang in school productions and community gatherings.
Her career began in earnest as a teenager, when her aunt and cousin took her to cabarets to perform. Although her father wanted her to become a teacher, she followed her heart and chose music instead, studying voice, theory and piano at Havana’s National Conservatory of Music. In the late ’s, she competed on an amateur radio show contest called “The Tea Hour.” As a result of her growing radio fame, she came to the attention of influential producers and musicians.
