CHILDHOOD AND EARLY LIFE
Marcello Mastroianni, an iconic Italian actor, was born on September 28, , in Fontana Liri, Lazio, Italy to Ottone and Ida Mastroianni. His father was the owner of a carpentry shop.
He was brought up in Turin and Rome. He was confined to a German Prison Camp during the World War II. He successfully escaped the prison and went on to hide in Venice. After the World War II, he started studying at the ‘University of Rome’ and participated in amateur theatricals aided by the University, thus making his acting debut.
CAREER
Marcello Mastroianni started his professional film career as an uncredited extra actor. His first appearance in a film was in the movie ‘Marionette’ at the age of fourteen. His second film, also as an uncredited extra, was in ‘The Children are watching us’ in
Marcello started working for ‘Lion Films’ in its Italian Section in in Rome and also involved himself with a drama club there. For the next six years, he had to be satisfied with acting in different insignificant, inconsequential roles in some films. His first big break came in when he was succes
Marcello Mastroianni was born in Fontana Liri, Italy in , but soon his family moved to Turin and then Rome. During WW2 he was sent to a German prison camp, but he managed to escape and hide in Venice. He debuted in films as an extra in Marionette (), then started working for the Italian department of "Eagle Lion Films" in Rome and joined a drama club, where he was discovered by director Luchino Visconti. In Visconti gave him the starring part in his Fyodor Dostoevsky adaptation White Nights () and in he was fine as a little thief in Mario Monicelli's comedy Big Deal on Madonna Street (). But his real breakthrough came in , when Federico Fellini cast him as an attractive, weary-eyed journalist of the Rome jet-set in La Dolce Vita (); that film was the genesis of his "Latin lover" persona, which Mastroianni himself often denied by accepting parts of passive and sensitive men. As the aging Casanova in La Nuit de Varennes (), Marcello Mastroianni politely turns down a young woman’s offer to be his th sexual conquest. His powdered face as white as his wig, his eyes sagging and world-weary, he says: “This old man didn’t take your breath away. It was his name, his reputation, his past. Today those things are gone.”
Mastroianni’s own attractiveness persisted to the end of his life. He died in at But his role in Varennes is a sly comment on and subversion of his on-screen image as the ultimate womaniser in classic films like Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita () and Vittorio De Sica’s Marriage Italian Style (). One of his many late-career triumphs, La Nuit de Varennes suggests how wisely he aged, how subtly he acted, how much more there was to him than the simplified image.
