UKIP MEP Patrick O'Flynn defects to 'resurgent' SDP
UKIP's ex-economic spokesman Patrick O'Flynn is leaving the party, blaming what he called leader Gerard Batten's "fixation with Tommy Robinson".
He is joining the Social Democratic Party, claiming UKIP had become an "impediment to Brexit campaigning".
Mr O'Flynn claimed many members had left because of the decision to employ the EDL co-founder as a party adviser.
Mr Batten says Mr Robinson will help him turn UKIP into a "mass movement a party for ordinary people".
In a statement on his website, Mr O'Flynn said that when he asked himself who the "millions of sensible, moderate Brexit voters betrayed by establishment parties" should vote for, the answer was "clearly not UKIP".
He is joining the Social Democratic Party - best known as the SDP - as its sole MEP.
Mr O'Flynn said UKIP had decided to put off a decision on former BNP and EDL members joining the party until after the UK leaves the EU.

Ukip MEP Patrick O'Flynn has resigned as the party's economics spokesman and apologised to Nigel Farage, after criticising the leader for being "snarling, thin-skinned and aggressive".
In a statement, the former journalist said he regretted going public with his frustrations about the party's fortunes on election day, after the 'purple revolution' failed to deliver more than a single Westminster seat.
"I would like to apologise directly to Nigel for the phrase 'snarling, thin-skinned and aggressive'," he wrote.

"This was a fragment of a wider passage about perceptions and is not what I think of him. Nonetheless, I should have known better than anyone what use would be made of phrases that were both unkind and unfair.
"I am proud of what we achieved in the general election and am only sorry to have succumbed, as Roger (Helmer) put it with such impressive understatement, to public remarks that were 'unhelpful'. I think it appropriate to stand down as economic spokesman, which I have done.

To which I say rubbish. The disenchantment of the mass of the population with the political class is at least as great here as across the Atlantic. While the coalition is thankfully getting to grips with the twin scourges of big government and fiscal incontinence - the main bugbears in the US there are if anything more key issues on which the entire political elite is out of step with the populace in Britain.
For instance there is no law and order party in the legislature, something that would be unthinkable in the US. The Conservatives, Lib Dems and Labour all preach the unpopular creed of "community" punishment, so called presumably because it's the community that gets punished.
And Britain has no party that reliably puts Britain fist. All the Westminster parties agree increasing foreign aid spending is more important than protecting higher education spending. When push comes to shove none is prepared to defend British sovereignty against encroachment by supranational bodies such as the European Union and European Court of Human Rights.
