THORNTON WILDER

Thornton Wilder (–) was a pivotal figure in the literary history of the twentieth-century. He is the only writer to win Pulitzer Prizes for both fiction and drama. He received the Pulitzer for his novel The Bridge of San Luis Rey () and the plays Our Town () and The Skin of Our Teeth (). His other best-selling novels include The Cabala, The Woman of Andros, Heaven’s My Destination, The Ides of March, The Eighth Day and Theophilus North. His other major dramas include The Matchmaker (adapted as the musical Hello, Dolly!) and The Alcestiad. The Happy Journey to Trenton and Camden, Pullman Car Hiawatha and The Long Christmas Dinner are among his well-known shorter plays.

Wilder’s many honors include the Gold Medal for Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Book Committee’s Medal for Literature and the Goethe-Plakette Award (Germany).

The product of an alcoholic, syphilitic father and promiscuous American mother, Winston Churchill was one of the greatest figures of the twentieth century. Ironically, he would never have come to greatness but for his contemporary and bitter rival Adolf Hitler.

Descended from the Dukes of Marlborough, Churchill was primed for success despite his parental problems. He graduated from the Sandhurst military academy in and embarked upon a dizzying army career. He reported news from Cuba, served in India, and in he fought in the battle of Omdurman in Sudan, where he rode in one of the last great cavalry charges. The following year he was a newspaper correspondent in South Africa, covering the Boer War. Not yet twenty-five, he received a thousand dollars a month plus expenses—a staggering amount, but London’s Morning Post considered him worth it. Thornton Wilder (April 17, – December 7, ) was an Americanplaywright and novelist. Wilder's inspired novels and plays reveal his views of the universal truths in human nature and he often used the same characters in a range of geological and historical periods showing that the human experience is similar regardless of the time or place. Wilder incorporated the strategy of make-believe by having the actors address the audience directly and by not using props and scenery.

He won the three Pulitzer Prizes (both fiction and drama), numerous Tony Awards, and many other literary awards for his work. His works are read, performed, studied, and appreciated by audiences worldwide. An thought provoking aspect of his literary legacy is that on the one hand he found life wonderful but on the other admitted that many people experience tragedy and terror.
