“I think that, when you begin to work with the idea of suggesting, say a particular psychological state of affairs, you have eliminated so much from the process of painting that you make an artificial statement which is, I think, not desirable. I think one has to work with everything and accept the kind of statement which results as unavoidable or a helpless situation. I think that most art which begins to make a statement fails to make a statement because the methods used are too schematic or too artificial. I think that one wants from a painting a sense of life. The final suggestion, the final statement, has to be not a deliberate statement but a helpless statement. It has to be what you can’t avoid saying, not what you set out to say”.

WORKS
Yago Hortal (Barcelona, ), studied Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona and the University of Seville. In , one year after graduating, he wins the 49th Prize for Young Painters. The following year, at only 25 years of age, he began to exhibit not only in Spain but also in the rest of Europe and the United States. His paintings maintain a tight relationship between the work of art and action painting itself. The canvas forms part of a performance in which the artist consciously creates spontaneous color forms in an infinite gamma, expressing passion and vibrancy. The painting seems to come out of the canvas, causing a desire to touch it and creating textural sensations.

Yago Hortal
Fine Arts graduate from the University of Barcelona, he is one of the new artists who is currently most well-known internationally, taking part in exhibitions and city collections at places such as New York, Barcelona, Berlin and Los Angeles. His painting is a reflection of a turbulent and changing modernity and offers us a new vision of reality, freer and with new perspectives. The use of intense and vibrant chromatic colours placed onto the surface with an electric stroke, alive yet precise and studied, brings the painting to life almost as if the artist had jolted the matter in order to begin a dialogue with it. Thus, he turns the historical concept of pictorial abstraction on its head and discovers a new language in which the aim is to recreate the face and personality of colour.
