L’histoire se déroule sur l’île de Ceylanaujourd’hui le Sri Lanka, au sud-est de l’Inde. Deux pêcheurs de perles et amis d’enfance, Zurga et Nadir, se retrouvent sur la plage. L’un, Zurga, est chef du village. Ils évoquent ensemble leur histoire passée et leur passion commune pour une jeune prêtresse de Candi, Leïla. À l’époque, ils avaient préféré protéger leur amitié en renonçant tous les deux à cet amour. Cependant, Nadir avait secrètement revu Leïla.
Une prêtresse voilée arrive sur la plage pour protéger les pêcheurs par son chant. Nadir reconnaît dans sa voix celle de Leïla et lui répond en chantant. Plus tard, ils se rejoignent secrètement et se déclarent leur amour. Mais le grand prêtre les surprend et les dénonce à Zurga. Celui-ci, fou de jalousie, condamne les deux amants à mort.
Seul dans sa tente, Zurga regrette finalement sa cruauté. Lorsqu’il reconnaît en Leïla la jeune femme qui lui avait un jour sauvé la vie en risquant la sienne, il revient sur sa décision et décide d’aider les deux jeunes gens. Les pêcheurs de perles is based on the story of the selfless love of young Nadir and the priestess of Leila, on the way to happiness which the supreme priest Nourabad and Zurga stand – the leader chosen by the pearl seekers and an old friend of Nadir. Being jealous of him to Leila, Zurga decides to betray both to be executed but after painful thinking gives life to a friend of his youth and Leila, in whom he recognized the girl saved his life many years ago.
The St. Petersburg Chamber Opera, according to Yuri Alexandrov, will amaze the audience not only with the great performers of the main roles but also with colorful scenery and costumes.
