"Scott was eighty-fivemore than fifty years older than I,” Wesselhoeft said. “He was still very active and disciplined as a writer and critiqued my early efforts at writing YA fiction. He taught me many things about writing, but one stands out: Writing is about perseverance--never give up."

Adios, Nirvana
December 9, Among my favorite movies are Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous and Elizabeth Town Relevance? These are what Adios, Nirvana reminds me of. In fact, the two things things that I enjoyed the most about these movies and this book are Music and heart. Now, I know next to nothing about music. I sing off-key; I cannot play any instrument, so these just make my appreciation/admiration of anyone with skills in said areas all the greater Precisely why I enjoyed this book so much.
On a bridge, that's where this book starts. From there it grabbed me by my eyeballs and would not let go till the last page. That’s how good it was. I try to steer clear of book flap words to describe things I've read. But I’ll make an exception in this case. This book is riveting.
It’s well written. It’s lyrical without being annoying. Poems just aren’t my thing, knowing that this book is about a boy, a poet really, this book did not alienate me at all. Normally, when I see a stanza here or a stanza there, my eyes glaze over and I lose interest. That did not happen here because it’s also humorous without being too snarky.

ADIOS, NIRVANA and Conrad's Germany tour
In early , ADIOS, NIRVANA was nominated for Germany's top prize for young-adult literature--the Jugendliteraturpreis.
That October, I found myself on a whirlwind tour through Germany--seven speaking gigs in nine days. I dashed between cities on the ICE (Inter-City Express), the high-speed train linking Germany's major cities. I skimmed across green landscapes from Hamburg to Munich, Munich to Cologne, Cologne to Dortmund, Dortmund back to Cologne, Cologne back to Frankfurt. Plus, a sortie to the Bavarian Alps, where I spent the day touring Ludwig II's (or was that Walt Disney's?) castle, with a nice hike in the hills.
Along the way, I met lots of German students and fellow book lovers.
At every stop, my German publisher Carlsen Verlag treated me like a prince. I didn't win the big prize--that honor went to John Green for his YA novel THE FAULT IN OUR STARS.
