Σουλιμαίος στην καταγωγή, από το ανυπότακτο γένος των Σουλιμαίων, που ήτανε μίξη Σουλιωτών και Μανιατών, που ζούσανε επί τουρκοκρατίας, στο άπαρτο ύψωμα του Σουλιμά στο Δώριο Μεσσηνίας.
Οι πρόγονοί του, ήταν οπλαρχηγοί που πολέμησαν με τον Κολοκοτρώνη, αλλά και σε άλλα μέρη της Ελλάδος, στην επανάσταση του ΄ Γνωστός ο Λιάκος Λιακόπουλος ο Τουρκοφάγος, που έπεσε στις Μαρτίου του και το μνημείο του βρίσκεται πάνω στην Καρύταινα.
Μεγάλωσε και έζησε μέχρι τα 16 του, σε φτωχογειτονιά, που ουσιαστικά ήτανε προσφυγικά παραπήγματα, διαμορφωμένα από πρώην στάβλους του γαλλικού στρατού, σε σπιτάκια των 26 τετραγωνικών, χωρίς καν ύδρευση και χώρους υγιεινής.
