Two months ago, The Forgotten Woman chain for large sizes said it was buying Lillie Rubin after it outbid Cache with a $2 million offer that was accepted in a Delaware bankruptcy court auction. However, The Forgotten Woman was unable to close the deal, enabling Cache to step up again with a much lower offer.
Cache said Monday that it completed its acquisition for the Lillie Rubin trade name and 12 Lillie Rubin stores. The unit Cache posted a volume of $ million last year and sells better and designer merchandise. It caters to a younger clientele than Lillie Rubin, which at one time operated about two dozen stores.
Since around late July, the Lillie Rubin shops have been closed following liquidation sales, but the 12 units purchased by Cache will reopen around Sept. 12, according to Thomas E. Reinckens, Cache&#;s executive vice president and chief financial officer. NEW YORK &#; For the second time in two years, Lillie Rubin Fashions, an upscale chain based in Miami specializing in evening dresses, has filed a Chapter 11 petition and is on the selling block.
The filing, in Delaware Bankruptcy Court, listed liabilities at $ million, including $ million in unsecured debt. Assets were $ million.
&#;We are actively looking for a buyer,&#; said John Durham, vice president of stores. &#;We have some people indicating interest in us, but we want to get the word out that we&#;re for sale.&#;
The filing follows the breakdown of merger talks with The Forgotten Woman, a high-end chain with nine stores specializing in large sizes.
&#;We decided to walk away from negotiations about 10 days ago,&#; said Sanford J. Zimmerman, Forgotten Woman&#;s chairman and chief executive officer.
Last August, Forgotten Woman agreed to pay $ million in cash and stock to acquire the Rubin chain.
&#;We just couldn&#;t work anything out,&#; said Zimmerman. He added that Forgotten Woman still plans to open six stores this year.
