Pedro Albizu Campos
Many people in Puerto Rico consider Harvard-educated Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos the father of the Puerto Rican Independence Movement. Following the conclusion of the Spanish American War () Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States. Albizu Campos spent most of his life, from to his death in , fighting to make Puerto Rico an independent nation. For his activities he spent much of this life in prison, both in the United State and Puerto Rico.
Pedro Albizu Campos was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico on September 12, (an alternate date often given for his birth is June 29, ) to Alejandro Albizu and Juana Campos. In the Latin American tradition he adopted the surname of his father and mother, thus Albizu Campos.
When he was nineteen years he won a scholarship to study Engineering at the University of Vermont. A year later, in , he applied and was accepted to Harvard University.

Pedro Albizu Campos was born September 12, in Barrio Tenerías, a rural sector in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He had a difficult upbringing as his mother was a daughter of slaves who died when he was young, and his Basque merchant father neglected him throughout his childhood.
Nevertheless, Albizu Campos went to study Chemical Engineering at the University of Vermont with a scholarship. In , he transferred to Harvard University to continue his degree while also majoring in literature. Albizu Campos time at Harvard was filled with many extracurricular activities that provided insight to him in his fight for Puerto Rican independence.

Pedro Albizu Campos (June 29, [September 12, ?][1] — April 21, ) was a Puerto Rican politician, lawyer, and president of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party of which he led till his death. He was a significant leader for Puerto Rican independence who led the October revolts against the United States government.[2]

Pedro Albizu Campos was born in a poor village in Ponce, Puerto Rico; the exact date is unknown as he gave two dates of birth when asked, but when asked his age it corresponds to the year [1] His father, Alejandro Albizu Romero, was of Basque descent and was the former treasurer of the Autonomist Party of Puerto Rico. He was considered an illegitimate son up until the death of his mother, Juliana Campos.[3]
