Prof Mamokgethi Phakeng (formerly Setati) is the University Of Cape Town Vice Chancellor. She was previously a full  Vice Principal of Research and Innovation at Unisa.

Prof Mamokgethi Phakeng holds a PhD in Mathematics Education from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. She is a B2 NRF-rated scientist and has been invited as a speaker and visiting professor at international conferences and universities in Australia, Botswana, Canada, Denmark, Finland, India, Italy, Kenya, Lesotho, Mexico, Mozambique, Namibia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Senegal, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and USA. She has won several awards for her research and community work, the latest being the CEO magazine award for being the most influential woman in education and training (Academic) in Africa and the NSTF award for being the most outstanding Senior Black Female Researcher over the last 5 to 10 years in recognition of her innovative, quality research on teaching and learning mathematics in multilingual classrooms. Mamokgethi Phakeng (formerly Setati) began her term of office as Vice-Chancellor of the University
of Cape Town on 1 July , where she had been serving as Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research
and Internationalisation since January Previous to this appointment she served as Vice
Principal for Research and Innovation at the University of South Africa (Unisa) for five years, after
serving three years as Executive Dean of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology at the
same university. She holds a PhD in Mathematics Education from the University of the
Witwatersrand and is a highly regarded B1 NRF-rated scientist with over 80 research papers and five
edited volumes published. She has been invited to deliver over 40 keynote/plenary talks at
international conferences, and as a visiting professor in universities around the world (in Australia,
Botswana, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, India, Italy, Jamaica, Kenya, Lebanon,
Lesotho, Mexico, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Senegal, South Korea,

Professor Phakeng returned to the Univeristy of Bristol in the first week of October for the final part of her year-long Bristol Illustrious Visiting Professorship.  She took part in two public lecture events, one was in her research area of Mathematics Education 'Mathematics Education and Language Diversity: From Language-as-Problem to Language-as-Resource'.   She also took part in an 'In Conversation' event with The Rt Hon. In in South Africa, the then Minister for Native Affairs, Dr HF Verwoerd, in a speech on the second reading of the Bantu Education Bill, said:

People who believe in equality are not desirable teachers for Natives… is the use of teaching the Bantu child mathematics when it cannot use it in practice? That is quite absurd (Verwoerd ).

Under apartheid the majority of Africans were denied access to any mathematics education. The legacy today is a system that still has marked inequalities in achievement in mathematics linked to, amongst other things, race, gender, socio-economic status, rurality and home language.

It is in this context that Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng (formerly Setati and lovingly known by most as ‘Kgethi’) has undertaken her exceptional and inspirational work in mathematics education in post-apartheid South Africa, where she has worked tirelessly to build institutions and create opportunities for others to access and thrive in mathematics.
