Childhood and Early Life in Paris

Rudolf Christian Karl Diesel was born in Paris, France, on March 18, The son of a German bookbinder, he grew up amidst the vibrant streets of the city. Despite his humble beginnings, Diesel was a curious and intelligent child who excelled in his studies.

Education in Germany

At the age of 13, Diesel left Paris with his family and moved to Augsburg, Germany. He continued his education at the Royal Polytechnic School, where he excelled in mathematics and engineering. In , while studying at the Technical University of Munich, Diesel was captivated by the thermodynamic cycle proposed by Sadi Carnot.

The Dream of a More Efficient Engine

Inspired by Carnot's work, Diesel embarked on the audacious goal of developing an engine that would revolutionize the way energy was utilized. He

Nikolaus Otto

Despite a lack of technical training, Nikolaus August Otto () had the ingenuity to make the first practical internal combustion engine. He later devised the four-stroke engine, known as the Otto cycle, which was widely used for automobile and other motors.

Nikolaus Otto was born in Holzhausen auf der Heide, a small village on the Rhine River in Germany. Although his father, the village postmaster, died soon after Otto was born, his mother raised him well. Young Otto excelled in school, and his mother planned for him to continue with a technical education, but the failed German revolution in and declining economic conditions made his mother believe that he would be better off as a merchant.

Otto left high school and got a job as a clerk in a grocery store. He soon was working as a clerk in the nearby city of Frankfurt. His older brother Wilhelm owned a textile business in Cologne, and he helped Otto get a job as a sales representative. Otto sold tea, sugar, and kitchenware to grocery stores along the western border of Germany.

Otto's First Engine

Though he spent a great deal of time travelling between his home in Cologne and the many small towns he served,

Rudolf Diesel

The German mechanical engineer Rudolf Diesel () is remembered for the compression-ignition internal combustion engine which bears his name.

Rudolf Diesel was born March 18, , in Paris. His interest in mechanics was early roused by frequent visits to the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers. Early in the Franco-Prussian War () all Germans had to leave Paris, and the Diesels went to England in poverty. After a brief stay there, Rudolf went to an uncle in Augsburg, Germany, where he received a thorough scientific schooling. From he attended the Munich Polytechnikum (later the Technische Hochschule) and graduated with highest honors. He studied thermodynamics under Carl von Linde and resolved—given the opportunity—to design a heat engine with a thermodynamic cycle approximating to the ideal described by Sadi Carnot in Great fuel economy could be expected from such a machine. But the opportunity was a long time coming. Meanwhile, in he returned to Paris to assist in the construction of a refrigeration plant for Linde and then became manager of it. During this period () he put much effort into an abortive design for an expansion engine using ammonia as working fluid

Introduction

Diesel, a term commonly associated in modern day society with a type of engine that powers many machines, is also the surname of a renowned scientist and inventor, Rudolf Diesel (see Fig. 1). Rudolf Diesel, a French-German engineer and inventor, is responsible for the creation of the Diesel engine, which is where this invention draws its name. Rudolf Diesel is an interesting example of a brilliant scientist who was never quite fully appreciated for his work in his lifetime. Although Diesel received recognition, attention, and funding from the scientific community and a small following in the general public for his early versions of the Diesel engine that we know and utilize today, the broad reaching impact of his technology did not fully become realized until years after his death in

Research

Rudolf Diesel began his research into combustion and engines after his graduation in from the Technische Hochschule (Technical School) in Munich. [1] At this school, Diesel achieved impressive grades and upon graduation began to work for one
