A graduate of Tokyo Gakugei University, Hiratsuka came to the United States in and received masters degrees from both New Mexico State University and Indiana University. He loves teaching, and had been a professor of printmaking at Oregon State University from to The intaglio prints which Mr. Hiratsuka creates represent a fusion of East and West, with roots in both contemporary and traditional art.
Hiratsuka has a distinctive personal style. Most often his subject matter is portraits, but the faces are rendered without eyes or noses. He says this comes from the Zen tradition in art, where both simplicity and suggestion are emphasized. Other elements can be thought of as stemming from traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock prints from the 17thth Centuries. They were brightly colored, sometimes humorous, and often featured poster-like caricatures of actors and other famous personalities.
The contemporary influence is seen in his choice of Western-style dress, and such characters as chiropractors or beauticians. In each work, Hiratsuka allows the viewer to see his or her own interpretation in the ambiguous faces
Yuji Hiratsuka
Yuji Hiratsuka was born in Osaka, Japan. In he moved to the United States to pursue graduate degrees in printmaking at New Mexico State University (M.A.) and at Indiana University (M.F.A.). Since Hiratsuka has been teaching printmaking and drawing at several universities. He currently serves as a Professor of printmaking at Oregon State University, Corvallis.
Although his artwork is representational, he deals with more metaphorical aspects in his work, rather than simple realistic images. While the images have some resemblance to traditional Japanese Ukiyo-e prints, their sense of whimsy, satire and irony relate more closely to contemporary life and western sensibilities.
Hiratsuka’s graphic work has been exhibited in the Americas, Europe and Asia. He has received numerous awards in international competitions. During the last four years he has had 14 solo shows in the United States, and international solo shows in Gabrovo, Bulgaria, Munich, Germany and Geneva, Switzerland.

Hiratsuka Yuji’s colorful, whimsical prints depict people from all walks of life in animated and contemplative moments that make us pause to consider what is really happening in the picture time and time again. He writes:

Fashion Dignitaries&#;Although my artwork is mainly considered representational, I deal with more metaphorical aspects rather than realistic physical evidence. The human body along with other elements: garments, fruit, vegetables, furniture, animals, etc. have been my focus. The images bear a slight resemblance to traditional Japanese Ukiyo-e prints, but also express contemporary aspects of the Western Hemisphere.
There are small transitions in my work from time to time, and my interest is always based on unpredictable texture that is printed from the etched surface of the copper plate. My prints explore the complex relationship of paper, ink and etched plates to describe my thought, as well as the relationship which occurs between figures and space to express other human experiences. Always I try to investigate the maximum potential available to me as a printmaker.
