Carlos Manuel “Charlie” Palmieri was born November 21, , and was born in the South Bronx, where he soon found his calling by teaching himself how to play the Piano. At age seven, Charlie was enrolled at The Julliard School and by the time he was 14, he was an award-winning pianist. After graduating from Samuel Gompers High School, he left to join different artists such as Moncho Usera, Polito Galindez, Bartolo Hernandez, and La Playa Sextet. He then organized El Conjunto Pin Pin, recorded for the Alba label, and studied harmony, composition, and arranging with Otto Chesna. In , Palmieri toured with The Xavier Cugat Band, replaced Tito Puente’s pianist, Gil Lopez, and participated in recording sessions for Rainfall, Mambo Diablo, and The Vibe Quintet. After a decade of success, Palmieri joined Al Santiago’s Alegre All-Starsand recorded five albums which were Pacheco (Volume 1), Pachanga at the Caravana Club (), Sala Na’ Ma’ (), Tengo Maquina y Voy a 60 (), and The Giant of the Keyboard (). Carlos Manuel &#;Charlie&#; Palmieri (November 21, – September 12, ) was a renowned bandleader and musical director of salsa music. He was known as the &#;Giant of the Keyboards&#;.

Palmieri&#;s parents migrated to New York from Ponce, Puerto Rico in and settled down in the South Bronx where Palmieri was born. As a child, Palmieri taught himself to play the piano by ear. He attended the public school system. At age 7, his father enrolled him at The Juilliard School, where he took piano lessons. By the time Palmieri was 14 years old, he and his 5-year-old brother, Eddie, participated in many talent contests, often winning prizes. It was at this time that his godfather introduced him to the music of the Latin bands &#; an experience which inspired him to become a musician.

In , when still only 16 years old and still in high school, he made his professional debut as a piano player for the Osario Selasie Band. He graduated from high school in , and immediately went to play for various bands. He made his recording debut with the song &#;Se Va La Rumba&#; as a member of the Rafael Muñiz Band.

 “When Charlie Palmieri was born, life became a bit happier,” says Max Salazar. “Many people’s lives were a little richer because they crossed Charlie’s path. 

From very early on, Charlie proved to be a gifted pianist, very percussive and responsive to rhythm while also flashing florid passages that were clearly the product of his classical education.  He taught himself to play the piano by ear. According to Max Salazar, “He would stand on the side of the piano facing his cousin Elsie and watch her perform her exercises. After a few weeks, he played everything she played without omitting a note – and he didn’t know how to read music!” Later, as a teenager, Charlie and Eddie entered talent shows. Charlie accompanied Eddie on vocals and more often than not, they walked away with prizes.

Like many Latin jazz artists of the time, Charlie Palmieri experimented with the popular Latin boogaloo style  and made some records for major labels like RCA Victor and Atlantic.  His piano studies began at seven and became pro at the age of He started the group El Conjunto Pin Pin in , before playing in a series of ensembles - including tho
