He lived several lives. Born on September 10, , he was a student at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Saint-Cloud, just outside of Paris, before becoming a professor in philosophy in He could very well have "only" been a sociologist. He was a sociology assistant from to , then a senior assistant and finally a lecturer () at the University of Paris-VIII-Vincennes, which moved to Saint-Denis (Seine-Saint-Denis) in He was a student of Raymond Aron and one of the theorists of the notion of ethno-iconography, so sociology was a very important part of who he was.
He might have "just" been a sociologist had it not been for the meeting which would go on to mark his life, in the early s, with Foucault. This relationship, described as "a state of passion," led them both to become activists in Gauche Prolétarienne (GP), a Maoist underground movement.

Daniel Defert is a prominent French AIDSactivist and the founding president of the firstAIDSawareness organization in France, AIDES. He started the organization after the death of his partner, the French philosopher Michel Foucault. He is an alumnus of the École normale supérieure de Saint-Cloud.
A professor of sociology, Daniel Defert has been Assistant, Maître-assistant, then Maître de Conférence at the Centre Universitaire of Vincennes, which became in , Université de ParisVIII Vincennes. He has been a member of the scientific committee for human sciences of the International Conference on AIDS; member of the World Commission for AIDS; member of the National Committee for AIDS, of the GlobalAIDSPolicy Coalition of Harvard University, and of the French "Haut Comité de la Santé Publique".
Daniel Defert is author of numerousarticles in the domain of ethno-iconography and public health. He has been awarded the decoration of Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur and received in the Prix AlexanderOnassis for the creation of AIDES.

Je n'aurais jamais voulu être ouvrier étant donné qu'ils avaient souhaité la réussite sociale, la réussite intellectuelle donc il n'était pas question de revenir en arrière vis-à-vis d'eux.
