UAE: President appoints members to Board of Trustees of National Human Rights Institution
President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has issued a decision regarding the formation of the Board of Trustees of the National Human Rights Institution (NHRI).
The decision stipulated the formation of the NHRI's Board of Trustees under the chairmanship of Maqsoud Kruse, and the membership of 11 members: Fatima Khalifa Juma Al Kaabi, Mariam Muhammad Al Ahmadi, Fatima Abdul Rahim Al Badwawi, Kulaitham Obaid Bakhit Obaid Al Matrooshi, Nour Ghanem Saif Rashid Al Suwaidi, Ameera Rashid Al Suraidi, Dr Ahmed Youssef Abdullah Al Mansoori, Mohammed Ibrahim Ahmed Al Hammadi, Dr Zayed Saeed Saif Saeed Al Shamsi, Dr Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman Abdullah Al Noman and Shahreyar Haider Ashraf Nawabi.
According to the decision, the Board shall select - from among its members - a vice-chairperson to act as the chairperson while absent, and the term of the council's membership shall be four years, starting from the date the decision enters into force.

Prior to that, he served as the Executive Director of Hedayah, The International Center of Excellence for Countering Violent Extremism, since its establishment in as an independent international “Think & Do Tank” focused on Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) in all of its forms and manifestations by conducting dialogue, capacity building, and research. H.E. Maqsoud Kruse has served as the executive director of the Abu Dhabi-based Hedayah since its establishment in December Prior to joining Hedayah, Kruse served as the head of Planning Section and later as the psychological affairs advisor at Global Aerospace Logistics, a subsidiary of the Emirates Advanced Investments Group. Kruse received a master’s in organizational psychology from the University of Melbourne in Australia. He also holds a bachelor’s in psychology from the United Arab Emirates University. His paper “Countering Violent Extremism Strategies in the Muslim World” appeared in “The ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and Social Science” as part of the November issue on “The Middle East and Regional Transition, Terrorism, and Countering Violent Extremism: What the Next President Will Face.”
National Human Rights Institution is independent: NHRI Chairperson
Maqsoud Kruse, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Institution (NHRI), said that the NHRI is established as an independent entity that has its own legal personality, and enjoys financial and administrative autonomy as enacted in the Federal Law No. (12) of and within the spirit of the Paris Principles.
In a statement Sunday on the occasion of assuming his duties, Kruse explained that the NHRI will oversee the government's performance on all matters related to human rights, develop proposals, make recommendations, and provide consultation to relevant stakeholders on ways to promote, protect and pursue human rights in government and private sectors.
He added that the NHRI will exercise its functions through close partnerships with governmental entities, civil society, non-governmental organisations, think tanks, research and academic centres, in addition to forming close partnerships and cooperating with different international organisations, in particular the UN, in order to develop good practices and be able to work in accordance with international standards.
