Mark Fabius Quintilian: Roman Orator and Educator
Mark Fabius Quintilian was a Roman orator and educator, born in Calagurris (modern-day Calahorra, Spain). He received his initial education in Rome and then returned to Spain in However, in 68, Emperor Galba, who had previously served as governor in Spain, summoned him to Rome.
Teaching Rhetoric in Rome
In Rome, Quintilian became a teacher of rhetoric and was granted a stipend from the treasury by Emperor Vespasian. He had many outstanding students, including Pliny the Younger and two grandnephews of Domitian. Around 88, Quintilian stopped teaching and speaking in court, dedicating himself to the composition of his treatise "Institutio oratoria" (Education of an Orator) in 12 books.

Introduction:
Quintilian is thought to have been born somewhere around A. D. (Kennedy, , p. 15) in Calagurris, now known as Calahorra, Spain. He studied in Rome, later becoming a teacher of oratory and rhetoric (Mayer, , p. ). His father had been an orator before him (Russell, , p. , Book IX) but never was as prominent as his son would become.
Quintilian's major work titled Institutio Oratoria (The Orator's Education)was a series of twelve books containing lessons involved with the form of rhetoric. In Book I Quintilian recommended that the orator's education in rhetoric begin as a young boy, in the tradition of the Greeks. Book II then dealt with the foundations of rhetoric, leading to the next nine books, in which the first five detailed 'Invention' and ended with "Elocution, with which was associated Memory and Delivery" (Ibid., p. 63, Book I).

MARCUS FABIUS QUINTILIANUS was born at Calagurris, now called Calahorra, a town of Spain on the Ebro. The time of his birth is uncertain, but as he was, while still young, a hearer of Domitius Afer at Rome, who died A.D. 59, we may reasonably suppose him to have been born about A.D.
What his father was is unknown. He alludes to him once, in the ninth book, where Spalding suggests that he may have been the pleader mentioned by Seneca the rhetorician in the preface to the fifth book of his Controversies; but for this supposition there is no foundation.
The scholiast on Juvenal says that he studied under the grammarian Palaemon.
He appears to have returned to Spain and to have been brought again from thence by the emperor Galba, A.D. 68, to Rome, where he distinguished himself in the two professions of pleader and teacher of eloquence. Among his pupils was Pliny the younger. His scholars seem to have been numerous, according to Martial,
