Starting in the early ’s Richard Neutra was one of the first generations of modernist architects who moved away from the architecture of adornment to one committed to the needs, of all kinds of people, the use of new technology to make good design affordable and responsive to climate as well as integrating nature and the landscape into the built environment. He was born and educated in Vienna and was deeply influenced by proto-modernist architect Otto Wagner who had, in written the book “Modern Architecture.”
Neutra studied with the early modernist Adolf Loos. Like his older school friend Rudolf Schindler, he admired the Prairie Houses of Frank Lloyd Wright and intended to emigrate to the USA in but was caught up in the Austrian army during WWI. After the war, he briefly worked with the landscape architect Gustav Amman in Switzerland and then as a town architect in the small town of Luckenwalde where he designed, in , housing and a landscaped forest cemetery. Richard Joseph Neutra; April 8, – April 16, ) was an Austrian-Americanarchitect. Living and building for the majority of his career in Southern California, he came to be considered among the most important modernist architects.
Biography
Neutra was born in Leopoldstadt, the 2nd district of Vienna, Austria Hungary, on April 8, into a wealthy Jewish family. His Jewish-Hungarian father Samuel Neutra (–) was a proprietor of a metal foundry, and his mother, Elizabeth "Betty" Glaser Neutra (–) was a member of the IKG Wien. Richard had two brothers who also emigrated to the United States, and a sister Pepi Weixlgärtner who was an artist who emigrated to Sweden where her work can be seen at The Museum of Modern Art.

More than three decades after his death, Richard Neutra remains among the most celebrated of the founders of modern architecture who managed to capture the spirit of modernism in a powerful and memorable way, and several of his works have become icons of twentieth-century architecture.
Born and reared in Vienna around the turn of the century, Neutra very early on demonstrated the facility for exquisite draftsmanship that would mark his later drawings. In , he enrolled in the architecture department of the Vienna Technical University. His professors at the Technical University included Rudolf Salinger, Karl Mayreder, and Max Fabiani. In addition, Neutra was drawn to the teachings and ideas of Otto Wagner and Adolf Loos, and he regularly attended Loos’s private lectures and tours of Vienna’s architecture.
The outbreak of World War I interrupted his education, and Neutra, who served for a time as an artillery officer in the Balkans, was unable to complete his training until He subsequently worked briefly for Erich Mendelsohn and others in Berlin before immigrating, in , to the United States.
